Wellesley, Mass., June 22, 2016 – An increasing focus on better conductivity, coupled with improvements in production efficiency, are the major factors fueling the global demand for semiconductor metallization and interconnects. BCC Research reveals in its new report that countries in the Asia-Pacific region especially are bolstering the demand for semiconductor metallization.
Semiconductor metallization is an integral part of semiconductor manufacturing. Metallization, the final step in the wafer processing sequence, is the process by which the components of integrated circuits are interconnected by an aluminum conductor. This process produces a thin-film metal layer that will serve as the required conductor pattern for the interconnection of the various components on the chip. Another use of metallization is to produce metallized areas called bonding pads around the periphery of the chip to produce metallized areas for the bonding of wire leads from the package to the chip.
The global semiconductor metallization and interconnects market, which totaled $1 billion in 2015, should reach almost $1.8 billion in 2020, reflecting a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.4%. The consumer electronics sector, which held the largest market share in 2014, should remain the market leader during the forecast period (2015-2020). The consumer electronics segment, valued at $377.9 million in 2014, is expected to reach $739.1 million by 2020, growing at a five-year CAGR of 11.5%. Asia-Pacific is expected to be the largest and fastest-growing market region. Countries such as India, Japan and Taiwan are driving demand in this segment.
Increasing demand for improving production efficiency and product life cycle is fueling global demand. In addition, technological advancements due to rigorous research and development should increase demand, as well. Among segments, the medical market suggests big growth potential due to increasing health awareness and greater demand for minimally invasive surgeries. The defense and aerospace segment is also expected to bolster the demand for semiconductor metallization and interconnects.
Rapid growth in the consumer electronics sector is another key factor fueling global demand. The consumer electronics market, fueled by technological developments and commercialization of technology, should enjoy robust growth over the forecast period. In turn, this should favorably impact the demand for semiconductor metallization.
“China is one of the major markets fueling the demand for semiconductors. Increasing consumption of semiconductors across the end markets in China and the country’s position as a manufacturing hub for the technology industry are expected to have a positive impact on the demand for semiconductor metallization,” says BCC Research analyst Sinha Gaurav. “Moreover, continued demand from countries including India, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, among others, is also expected to drive the demand for semiconductor metallization.”
