Flame Retardant Chemicals Market to Reach 6.9 Billion Pounds by 2023

May 23, 2018

WELLESLEY, Mass., May 23, 2018–The availability of natural resources, competitive industry purchases and a desire to save lives are all driving growth in the global flame retardant chemicals market, according to a report by BCC Research.

The global market is expected to see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.7% through 2022, when consumption could total 6.9 billion pounds, according to the report Flame Retardant Chemicals: Technologies and Global Markets.

Key players mentioned in this report include Albermarle, Israel Chemicals, Lanxess, Akzo Nobel, BASF, Clariant, Dover Chemical, ICC Industries, J.M. Huber, Kyowa Chemical Industry, Lhoist, Martin Marietta Materials, Nyacol Nano Technologies, Occidental Chemical, Rio Tinto Alcan Canada, Sherwin-Williams, Tor Minerals International, U.S. Antimony and Velsicol Chemical, among many others.

Research Highlights

  • Growth will be led by consumption of bromines, which anticipate at CAGR of 9.0% through 2022, though by size the industry will be led by phosphorous chemicals, with a 2023 value of $1.9 billion pounds.
  • Phosphorous has the largest market share by volume in 2017, estimated at 32%, followed by ATH at 25% and bromines at 20%.
  • The value of the flame retardant industry is also expected to increase from more than $8.7 billion in 2017 to $9.3 billion in 2018 and $12.7 billion in 2023. The applications with the highest growth rates will be plastics and textiles, reflecting strong growth in electronics applications, housing and construction.

“Today, many organizations and governments are reassessing the benefits of flame retardants against the negative side effects that cause harm to human health or the environment,” said BCC Research analyst and report author Andrew McWilliams. “Therefore, the flame retardant chemicals industry is in a state of transition, as some widely used flame retardant chemicals are being phased out. At the same time, emerging technology provides promise for continued flame retardant protection while reducing or eliminating the toxic effects.”

Industry Environment Focused on Recent Catastrophes, Availability of Raw Materials

Factors impacting the market include the desire to save lives, the availability of raw materials and recent significant events, the report adds. Major incidents in countries such as China and India have helped to focus attention on flame-retardant materials, while growth is both limited and facilitated by the availability of raw materials, upon which many production lines rely, as well as government policies, which affect access to those materials.

BCC Research hosts the annual FLAME conference—the premiere conference on flame retardants in the United States. FLAME 2018 was held May 20-23 in Stamford, CT. The 30th FLAME conference in 2019 will be held in San Antonio, TX. Visit bccresearch.com/flame for more information.
