Wellesley, Mass., April 28, 2015 –BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com) reveals in its new report on transparent ceramics, the global market increased from $106.8 million in 2012 to $143 million in 2014, corresponding to a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.7% during the two-year period. In recent years, the term transparent ceramics has broadened to include materials that are not only transparent to electromagnetic waves in the visible spectrum, but also by infrared and ultraviolet light.
Transparent ceramics is an optically transparent category of ceramics. Although the term ceramics is often used to designate both amorphous (i.e., glass) and crystalline materials, in this report it is used only in regard to a crystalline structure. Transparent glass-ceramics, which is derived from silica-based glass through a crystallization process, contains properties quite dissimilar from ceramics and are not included in this study.
“The optics and optoelectronics sector currently represents the most important field of application for transparent ceramics,” says BCC Research analyst Margareth Gagliardi. “The most relevant application within this sector is for fabrication of solid-state lasers. In lasers, transparent ceramics are used as host materials, optical windows for gas lasers, and for other components such as optical insulators, amplifiers and lenses.”
In addition, transparent ceramics is being utilized for manufacturing bulbs and lamp envelopes for commercial and vehicle lights. They are used in those applications where resistance to high temperatures and harsh chemical conditions is required. Also transparent ceremics can be introduced for manufacturing lights and displays based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
The global market for transparent ceramics reached $122.3 million and $143 million in 2013 and 2014, respectively. This market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 22.4% reaching $392.6 million in 2019.
Transparent Ceramics: Technologies and Global Markets delineates the current market status for transparent ceramic materials, defines trends and presents growth forecasts for the next five years. This market is analyzed based on the following segments: material type, application and region.
