Sensors for Trace Air Contamination Detection Market to See 13.8% Annual Growth Through 2022

Industry Boosted Growing Air Pollution and Government Rules to Address It

June 06, 2019

WELLESLEY, Mass., June 6, 2019–Growing air pollution problems worldwide and an increasing number of government regulations meant to combat it, are factors shaping the trace air contamination detection market, according to a report by BCC Research, “Sensors for Trace Contaminant Detection in Air: Technologies & Market.”

The market expects to see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.8% through 2022, when it could be worth $412.4 billion.

Major players in the market include AMS (SWX: AMS), Dexter Research Center, Honeywell Sensing and Productivity Solutions (NYSE: HON) and Siemens (ETR: SIE).

Research Highlights

  • Outdoor monitoring will lead the market by growth, with a CAGR through 2022 of 14.3%, followed by wearables at 13.9% and indoor monitoring at 13.3%.
  • For indoor monitoring, market growth will be strongest in the Asia-Pacific region, which expects a CAGR through 2022 of 13.9%, followed by North America at 13.4% and Europe at 13.2%.
  • For outdoor monitoring, North America leads the market by size, with a 2017 value of $25.7 million, followed by Europe at $23.2 million and the Asia-Pacific region at $19.9 million.

“Different sensor types are used to precisely detect levels of pollutants such as nitrous oxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter and ozone,” notes report author Tanmay Joshi. “The presence of these pollutants in high quantities in outdoor air can result in various chronic diseases, particularly respiratory disorders. The EPA has evaluated the performance of outdoor air quality sensors deployed since 2017; research is conducted at the Ambient Air Innovation Research Site in Research Triangle Park, N.C.”

Governments Launching Ambitious Programs to Tackle Pollution

Governments at all levels are launching programs meant to measure air pollutants as a basis for eradicating them. In 2018, the California Air Resources Board announced an ambitious satellite program to track greenhouse gas emissions. In London, the Under2 Coalition aims to support regional governments in developing nations as they seek to reach the Paris Agreement goals. The U.S.-China Green Ports and Vessels Initiative allows both countries to share tools, practices and technologies for the assessment and reduction of air pollutants.
