In today's sea of text, the science of finding signal in noise is becoming big business.
Emails, texts, chats and everything posted on social media every second of every day constitute an amount of data that is literally impossible for a human brain to imagine, let alone monitor.
But advances in AI are allowing cutting-edge entities to parse through this universe of random information and detect trends, patterns and meaning. This can be used, of course, to advertise more goods and services and predict how the next would-be blockbuster film will actually perform.
But beyond mere sales, it can be used to predict political unrest, identify terrorist cells and detect hate speech and violent intentions in online groups. It's being utilized at the time of this writing to investigate the insurrection at the Capitol Building in January 2021.
