Global Chitan and Chitosan Market Predicted to Double by 2021

April 05, 2017

Wellesley, Mass., April 05, 2017 – New proprietary research by BCC Research reveals that the rising number of lifestyle-related diseases and the increased adoption of chitin in the textile, water treatment, personal care products and healthcare industries are all expected to drive big growth in the global market for chitin and chitin derivatives. In 2021, the market should total $4.2 billion; more than double the market's value of $2.0 billion in 2016.

BCC Research's Chitin and Chitosan Derivatives reports that the demand for chitin and chitosan has partly increased because as environmentally friendly products, their increased consumption as substitutes for the harmful chemicals used in water treatment, fertilizers and pesticides could reduce environmental toxins.

Research Highlights

  • Chitin is the second largest biopolymer after cellulose.
  • Chitosan has wide application in wastewater treatment for the removal of toxic chemicals and metal ions.
  • Emerging regions such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East are expected to see tremendous growth.

"Their wide range of applications, large number of end-user industries and significant developments in the research of chitin and chitosan derivatives are driving significant demand," says Kevin Fitzgerald, BCC Research editorial director. "Major end-user industries include water treatment, food and beverages, personal care products, agrochemicals, industrial, biomedicine, and pharmaceuticals."

Many Benefits of Chitin and Chitosan Derivatives Galvanizing Market

Chitin and chitosan derivatives are natural polymers and provide an ecofriendly solution to variety of applications such as water treatment, biomedical, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers and pesticides.

"The recent demand for chitin and chitosan has jumped due to its easy availability and easy production process. Properties such as its nontoxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability make it ideal for making healthcare products sutures, implants and artificial organs," says Fitzgerald. "It can stimulate defensive mechanism properties in plants, making it ideal for crop protection. Chitin and chitosan derivatives are used in dietary supplements because of their various health benefits, as well."
