Global Biochip Markets: Microarrays and Lab-On-A-Chip

September 16, 2011

Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, GLOBAL BIOCHIP MARKETS: MICROARRAYS AND LAB-ON-A-CHIP (BIO049D) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global value of biochip products totaled $3.9 billion in 2011. That value is projected to reach nearly $9.6 billion in 2016 after increasing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.5%.

The global biochip market can be broken down by product end use into three segments – tools, diagnostics, and sequencing.

The segment comprised of tools held a value of $1.8 billion in 2011, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.4% to reach a value of $2.7 billion in 2016.

The segment made up of diagnostics, worth nearly $1.2 billion in 2011, should be worth $4.1 billion in 2016, a CAGR of 28.2%.

The sequencing segment totaled more than $900 million in 2011, and in 2016 that value should reach more than $2.7 billion, a CAGR of 24.2%.

Within the past few years, numerous industry alliances and acquisitions have occurred, altering the competitive dynamics of the biochips market. In addition, more biochips-based diagnostics have been launched, as well as next-generation sequencing systems. At the same time, several market segments have been affected by a slowdown in the genome-wide association market.  Given these changes, it is timely to reexamine the biochips business.

BCC Research has compiled a study of critical biochip technologies that are used in the five major end-user segments: research tools, drug discovery and development, diagnostics, sequencing, and applied markets. The report discusses the biochip platforms, market growth driving forces, product types, key market applications, companies and alliances, industry dynamics, patents, future market potential, and product sales forecasts.

This study will be of particular interest to the companies in the following industries: diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, nanotechnology, life sciences tools, biodefense, medical devices, polymers, glass, bioinformatics, and genetic services. It will also be of interest to companies involved in drug and/or biomarker discovery programs; manufacturers of microarrays and lab-on-a-chip devices, antibodies, restriction enzymes, or primers; bioinformatics developers; and cancer researchers and clinicians.
