INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
 
Machine vision (MV) is an automated technology through which images are captured and transferred to a PC and processed thereafter, for inspection and reporting of the processed results. MV systems are devices that capture and analyze visual information, and are used to automate tasks that require “seeing.” A camera lens and an image sensor are used to capture images. Vision software analyzes what is being seen and communicates information to other equipment. Vision systems also require lighting and are configured by connecting them to a display device such as a computer monitor. 
 
Vision systems can have a variety of physical forms, depending on the user’s need. Users can purchase vision software to use with their own cameras and processors, or they can purchase a stand-alone unit that combines the camera, processor, and software into a single package. These systems have increasingly become more powerful while at the same time easy to use. Recent advancements in MV technology, such as smart cameras and vision-guided robotics, have increased the scope of the MV market for a wider application in the industrial and nonindustrial sectors.
 
Today, MV is used to ensure the quality of everything from tiny computer chips to massive space vehicles as well as in major security applications and traffic and crowd-control applications. MV has evolved to become a vital and effective automation tool that enables computers to replace human vision in many high-speed and high-precision manufacturing and nonindustrial applications. Today, MV systems are utilized in all industrial applications, including semiconductor, electronics, pharmaceuticals, packaging, medical devices, automotive, and consumer goods. It has also become a major tool in traffic management, toll collection, and many other nonindustrial uses.
