September 23, 2011

Wellesley, Mass. – In a recent release, THE GLOBAL MARKET FOR CAROTENOIDS (FOD025D) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global carotenoids market totaled nearly $1.2 billion in 2010. In 2018, that value is projected to surpass $1.4 billion, increasing at an eight-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.3%.

The global market for carotenoids can be broken down into 10 products – beta-carotene, lutein, astaxanthin, capsanthin, annatto, canthaxanthin, lycopene, beta-apo-8-carotenal, zeaxanthin, and beta-apo-8-carotenal-ester.

Beta-carotene accounted for $261 million in 2010 and will be worth $334 million in 2018, a CAGR of 3.1%.

Lutein accounted for $233 million in 2010 and will be worth $309 million in 2018, a CAGR of 3.6%.

Astaxanthin accounted for $226 million in 2010 and will be worth $253 million in 2018, a CAGR of 1.4%.

Capsanthin accounted for $130 million in 2010 and will be worth $149 million in 2018, a CAGR of 1.7%.

Annatto accounted for $129 million in 2010 and will be worth $152 million in 2018, a CAGR of 2.1%.

Canthaxanthin accounted for $87 million in 2010 and will be worth $74 million in 2018, a CAGR of -2.0%.

Lycopene accounted for $66 million in 2010 and will be worth $84 million in 2018, a CAGR of 3.1%.

Beta-Apo-8-carotenal accounted for $24 million in 2010 and will be worth $34 million in 2018, a CAGR of 4.5%.

Zeaxanthin accounted for $16 million in 2010 and will be worth $18 million in 2018, a CAGR of 1.5%.

Beta-apo-8-carotenal-ester accounted for $11 million in 2010 and will be worth $14 million in 2018, a CAGR of 3.1%.

Carotenoid production has always been at the forefront of technology. The manufacturing processes required are sophisticated and only those companies with elaborate chemical and/or fermentation and/or extraction skills can produce carotenoids.

The market setup for carotenoids over the past three years has developed further, changed dramatically in some areas, and has also seen a reverse in the previous trend of decreasing prices across most products. The main categories of carotenoids are still the same; no new types of carotenoids have entered the market, but new manufacturing technologies have been introduced for some products.

Generally speaking, the manufacturing industry structures were recently consolidated, and several companies that were in the market during the mid-2000s disappeared. Now, a limited number of companies dominate the global carotenoid business.

The report intends to assist producing companies and users of carotenoids in the food, feed, and supplement industries by providing them with a comprehensive overview of the carotenoid industry. Strategy and business planning should become easier and more reliable. The report may also help companies and players in other ingredient markets who are considering diversification into attractive and well-fitting sectors, one of which may be carotenoids.
